Considering treatment for pleural effusion

I have bilateral pleural effusions. I have had one thoracentesis. I have decided to stop systemic treatment of cancer, my focus is comfort and quality of life.

I am interested in the lived experience of having a pleurodesis done and recovery from the procedure. And the lived experience of having a pleural catheter placed and living with it. Thank you so much.

I don't want to keep going back for repeat thoracentesis - I may be a candidate for one or both of the above procedures - any input/insight into living with these choices would be most appreciated.

Thank you, Mary.

  1. Hi there Mary!

Here to offer support for you at this time. I unfortunately have not experienced this, so I cannot speak on it.
If it is something you are a candidate for, and are interested in pursuing the surgery, I say cover the bases and get the info. You are doing the work necessary for any procedure, so I applaud you.

I hope your week has been going smoothly!

    2. I have had a left pleural effusion and had several Thoracentesis hoping the fluid would eventually stop as my chemo treatments progresses. I finally had a pleural tube inserted a month ago. I have drained it once a week and am getting just a trace amount! I hope to get it removed in a few weeks. It’s not been a problem having it taped to my side and covered with a sterile dressing.
